Ice Cream

Why am I waiting in line for ice cream? God knows I don’t need it! I want to lose some weight. It’s a beautiful summer day with only a few puffy white clouds in the sky. The thermometer has pushed past 85. What a great day for ice cream! So I pack the family in the car to head to our favorite ice cream stand. Fresh homemade ice cream, here we come! We pull up and luckily we find a spot to park, but I’m dreading the obvious. Look at that line! Are we sure we want ice cream? What about a shake from the fast-food drive-thru? Obviously quality of product is present (the line), quality of service isn’t bad. I watch as other potential patrons see the line then keep driving on to the fast-food restaurant for a shake. If only this place could be more efficient! How can a business maintain quality and improve efficiency? Through Lean principles, we can identify wastes that are occurring in the process of dipping out ice cream. Quality can be improved because a good process will ensure that the high school student can give efficient service too. Maybe they need to have a sign like Disney that announces approximate wait times.
